Day #5 - Visit Bruges

Any visit to Belgium would be incomplete without some sightseeing.  Today we will head to a very old historic city, Bruges.  When you visit Bruges, you will need some time on your own.  You will have a chance to discover this medieval pearl, with its canals, churches, historical buildings and intact medieval street pattern. There will be a guided city walk including a visit to the Halve Maan Brewery (i.e. Half Moon)  in the town center.  If enough people are interested, an excursion to the Trappist Abbey of Westvleteren is possible.  In the evening, we will have a great dinner at Cambrinus, a brasserie famous for its beer cuisine.

Day #4 - Visit Trappist Monasteries

One cannot have a “beercation” in Belgium without visiting a Trappist Abbey! As Trappist monks have their own style, so do their beers.  Our first visit will be to Chimay.   Chimay is actually a town and the Abbey of Scourmont is the name of the place where the beer is made. We will see the gardens, the church, and places of worship, all bathed in natural light amidst the silence.

The wonderful store/restaurant outlet across the road will make you thirsty and hungry.

Our second visit will be to Rochefort.  It is quite different from Chimay. This Abbey is much smaller, (beer production is 1/20 of Chimay) and its public philosophy is very different... as you will find out when you come to visit.

Day #3 - Brewery Tours

Our day will begin with a visit to Brouwerij Bosteels, which is famous for its fine beers, Kwak, Tripel Karmeliet and Deus. Operated by 7th generation brewers, their ancestor John Bosteels started brewing in 1791!  You will be quite impressed by the large collection of carriages and beer wagons on display at the entrance. Even better, you will enjoy a historical movie and beer tasting inside their special taproom!

After lunch, we will travel to the village of Ertvelde, near Ghent ( the second largest city in Flanders), for a visit to Brouwerij Van Steenberge.  This brewery is most famous for two beers, Gulden Draak and Piraat.  Your group will be hosted by Jef Versele, a 6th generation master brewer.  He stands 6’ 6” tall and is very proud of his ancestors and the beer they make. You'll get to drink beer and enjoy a great dinner with him while he regales you of the history of Belgian beer

Day #2 - Brewery Tours

In the morning you will have the pleasure of visiting Cantillon, one of the oldest Lambic producers in Belgium. Entering this family-owned brewery feels like stepping into a time capsule, taking you back to the end of the 19th century. You'll see equipment from the 19th century and the smell of oak vats and fermentation is everywhere! During the visit, you will have a chance to taste these world famous sour ales.

After a wonderful lunch, we are ready to learn more about spontaneous fermentation, lactobacillus and brettanomices bruxellensis.  Our next visit will be to Brouwerij Boon, the world's leading producer of Lambic.  The brewery is located in Lembeek, a village just outside of Brussels.  Here you will find a brand new brew house and an interesting mix of new technology and centuries-old traditions!  After a Lambic tasting in the cultural center of the village, we will drive to our hotel and prepare for our dinner.
